Project Description

The San Gabriel Trench project will result in the grade separation of four streets over the Union Pacific rail line in the City of San Gabriel. Trains will be lowered in a 2-mile trench within the existing Union Pacific Railroad railway, allowing vehicles and pedestrians to pass over the tracks on bridges to be constructed at Ramona Street, Mission Road, Del Mar Avenue, and San Gabriel Boulevard in the City of San Gabriel.

Project Impacts

The Federal Railroad Administration predicts one train-vehicle collision at these crossings every four years. This project would eliminate hazardous conditions while reducing congestion and air pollution at the four grade crossings. The walls of the trench will provide acoustic shielding of train noise, resulting in the substantial reduction of noise near the tracks. In addition, ACE will construct pedestrian safety improvements and improve landscaping at these crossings. Bridge and trench construction will require the temporary and alternating closures of Ramona Street, Mission Road, Del Mar Avenue and San Gabriel Boulevard. Advance notice of closures, detours and other construction impacts will be provided.

Project Status

Environmental studies are being updated. Design began in Winter 2007. ACE is working with the City of San Gabriel and other agencies to coordinate the project. Funding is being sought for construction and right-of-way acquisition.
